London Gazette 14 January 1916; citation published 11 March 1916:
‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as stretcher bearer. Privates Doyle and Fryer repeatedly exposed themselves to heavy fire in order to collect the wounded.’
Annotated Gazette states ‘Ypres.’

Sydney Fryer attested for the Essex Regiment and served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War in 1902, and subsequently during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 September 1914. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his services as a stretcher bearer during the Battle of Ypres, he subsequently transferred to the Labour Corps.
