Frank Taylor was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, in 1878 and served with the Special Service Section of the Royal Engineers in South Africa during the Boer War from 4 March 1901 to 21 July 1902, and subsequently with the West Riding Divisional Engineers, Royal Engineers (Territorial Force), being awarded his Territorial Force Efficiency Medal per Army Order 95 on 1 April 1911. He served briefly during the Great War at home.
