18th Century Tokens, Herefordshire, Hereford, Robert Biddulph, Milton’s Penny, 1796, bull breaking its chains, election date above, herefordshire above animal, rev. apple-tree and short-handled plough within wreath, edge plain, 18.28g/12h (DH 3; Stainton 39). Light die flaws in exergue, minor surface marks on reverse, otherwise extremely fine, rare (£100-150)

Struck to mark the return of the issuer as Member of Parliament for Herefordshire at the Election on 3 June 1796. The obverse symbolises the county breaking free of Tory shackles in electing a Whig. For further details see Doty, CTCJ Spring 2002, pp.10-15
