Lot

№ 691

.

14 December 2004

Estimate: £300–£400

Bermuda, Ireland Island Co-operative Society Ltd, uniface brass Eleven Pence, 29mm (Lyall 105). Good very fine, extremely rare (£300-400)

Provenance:
From a private source in Bermuda.

The tokens in this and the following two lots were issued by the co-operative store near the Royal Navy base at Ireland Island. It is believed that they were used for small change purposes when ratings were paid to the nearest shilling to minimise the effort of handling small value coins by the RN pay section. The only other examples seen by the cataloguer were the Fivepence and Threepence values in the collection of Dr William Tankersley (Baldwin Auction 18, 12 October 1998, lots 192-3). They were absent from the Ford, Pridmore and Byrne collections
