Thomas Henry Hookway was attached to the Royal Australian Navy at H.M.A.S. Cerberus, the training establishment for R.A.N. at Melbourne from January 1941 to March 1944, when he joined H.M.A.S. Penguin, another R.A.N. training base located at Balmoral on the lower north shore of Sydney Harbour, before reverting to the Royal Navy in August 1944.
