John Pilkington was born in Wigan, Lancashire, on 8 April 1900 and joined the Royal Navy for the duration of hostilities on 1 May 1918. He served in the minesweepers H.M.S. Bacchus and H.M.S. Satona, and was shore demobilised on 10 February 1919.
