‘During the Great Frost, Gerald Holford, a 17 year old schoolboy at Rock Ferry High School, made a plucky rescue of a boy who had fallen through the ice on Birkenhead Park lake. He was awarded a Silver Medal by Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society, which was presented to him by His Worship the Mayor of Birkenhead, Alderman G. A. Solly, at the School. In honour of the award, the school was granted a half-holiday.’
