Frank Cowie was appointed to the I.A.R.O. as 2nd Lieutenant in March 1917. He trained at the Officers School of Instruction at Ambala. Originally attached to the 88th Infantry he later transferred to the 79th Carnatic Infantry and was mentioned in despatches for services in Iraq.
