Ernest Wilfred Andrews was born in Winchester in 1878 and attested there for the Imperial Yeomanry on 23 January 1900. He served with the 50th (Hampshire) Company, 17th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 7 April 1900 to 9 June 1901, and was promoted Corporal on 7 September 1900, and Quartermaster Sergeant on 7 March 1901. He was discharged on demobilisation on 15 June 1901, after 1 year and 144 days’ service.
