M.C. London Gazette 18 July 1918:

‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his platoon with great skill and courage, and was amongst the first three to enter the enemy trenches and set a fine example to the whole of the company.’

Eric Jeffcoat Smith served with the 10th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, in France and Belgium from 31 July 1915 to April 1916. He was appointed to a commission as 2nd Lieutenant, 13th London Regiment on 5 August 1916, and served in France again from September to November 1916; he afterwards served in Greek Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, European Turkey and the Islands of the Aegean Sea, from December 1916 to June 1917; and with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from June 1917 to October 1918.
