William Henry Weekes was born in 1889 at Plymouth, Devon and attested for the Devonshire Regiment at Devonport in 1911. He served as a Drummer with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 22 August 1914. His battalion, in Jersey at the outbreak of war, initially served in France on the Lines of Communication but then saw action on the Aisne, and at the Battles of la Bassée and Armentières in 1914.

Advanced Lance Corporal, Weekes was killed in action on the Western Front on 4 January 1917. He was the son of William and Rosina Weekes, of Yealmpton, Devon and is buried in Gorre British and Indian Cemetery, France.
