John Murdiff was born in Kingstown, Ireland, and having emigrated to Australia attested for the Australian Imperial Force at Sydney. He served with the 2nd Battalion, and latterly with the 1st Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery, during the Great War on the Western Front, and was killed in action on 20 July 1916. He is buried in Pozieres British Cemetery, France.
