Harry Gordon Stables was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, on 15 October 1887 and joined the Royal Navy on 29 July 1906. He transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve on 30 July 1911, but was recalled for War Service and served during the Great War in the rate of Able Seaman in a variety of ships and shore based establishments, being shore demobilised on 17 February 1919.
