Henry George Sheppard was born in Portsea, Hampshire, on 25 August 1889 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 29 April 1907. He served in H.M.S. Philomel from 12 February 1908 to 25 July 1909, and was promoted Able Seaman on 18 February 1909. He saw further service during the Great War in a variety of ships and shore based establishments, and was promoted Leading Seaman on 1 April 1915. He was shore discharged, time expired, on 6 November 1919.
