George Thomas H. Baker was born in Devonport on 10 January 1887 and joined the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer Fourth Class on 6 October 1908. He served in H.M.S. Perseus from 27 March 1909 to 27 May 1910, and then during the Great War in H.M.S. Implacable and H.M.S. Courageous. Advanced Chief Engine Room Artificer on 1 January 1919, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1922, and was shore pensioned on 9 February 1925.
