Anthony Gilson was born in Malta on 17 February 1894 and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker Second Class on 2 July 1913. He served during the Great War in a variety of ships and shore based establishments, and was advanced Leading Stoker on 26 September 1929. He served in H.M.S. Cumberland from 25 February 1930 to 20 February 1932, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 17 February 1931. Promoted Stoker Petty Officer on 10 August 1934, he was shore pensioned on 8 July 1935. Recalled for War Service on 13 October 1939, he was finally shore released on 14 August 1945.
