John Thomas Gard was born on 14 December 1871, at Gosport, Hampshire. He commenced his naval service as a Domestic Third Class in H.M.S. Volage, on 3 September 1891. He left the service for five years in 1896, during which time he was a civilian employed at the Haslar Naval Hospital, before rejoining H.M.S. Terrible as Officers Cook in February 1912. During the Great War he served in several vessels and shore bases including H.M.S. Argonaut, H.M.S. Europa and H.M.S. Llewellyn. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal in 1924 and was discharged to pension in December 1926.
