Joseph Palmer Farrant was born on 24 May 1895 in Bermondsey, London, and entered naval service on 28 January 1912. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 1 February 1934.

William McKnight was born in May 1900 in Aberdeen, and entered naval service on 8 August 1917. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 25 May 1933.
