Middlesex [incorporating London], Greater Metropolitan area, Brentford, Skidmore’s Clerkenwell series, Penny, Sion House, rev. shield of arms, edge lettered, 24.39g/12h (DH 160). Light surface marks, otherwise extremely fine and patinated (£80-100)

Provenance:
Fawcett/Litman Collection.

Sion House was erected by the 1st Duke of Somerset, guardian of Edward VI. Following his execution in 1552 the house passed to John Dudley, whose son had married Lady Jane Grey. Lady Jane was offered the Crown of England at the house, reluctantly accepted and was proclaimed Queen; nine days later she was displaced by Mary Tudor and later executed (see lot 275). In 1594 the house was acquired by Henry Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland, and the Percy family has been in residence there ever since
