Hammer Price:
£140

Herefordshire, Hereford, Robert Biddulph, Milton’s Penny, 1796, bull breaking its chains, election date above, rev. apple-tree and short-handled plough within wreath, edge plain, 17.73g/12h (DH 1; Stainton 39). A late striking with die crack running across animal; minor surface marks, otherwise extremely fine and lightly patinated, very rare (£100-150)

Provenance:
Fawcett/Litman Collection.

Struck to mark the return of the issuer as Member of Parliament for Herefordshire at the Election on 3 June 1796. The obverse symbolises the county breaking free of Tory shackles in electing a Whig. For further details and the suggestion, almost certainly correct, that DH 1 and 2 post-date DH 3 and 4, see Doty,
CTCJ Spring 2002, pp.10-15
