Hampshire, Netley, Skidmore’s Penny, 1797, Netley Abbey ruins, rev. Thomas Gorton’s cypher, edge lettered, 26.02g/12h (DH 4). Minor marks in obverse field, otherwise extremely fine, rare (£150-200)

Provenance:
Bt Spink 1972.

Netley Abbey was founded as a Cistercian monastery by Peter des Roche, bishop of Winchester, in 1239. After the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536 Henry VIII granted the site to William Paulet, who converted the building into a private residence which was subsequently demolished in the early 18th century and the stone sold for building material
