Hammer Price:

Hampshire, Basingstoke, John Pinkerton, Mynd’s Shilling, 1789 [7 over 8], barge, rev. wheelbarrow and tools, decorated leaf edge, 13.96g/6h (DH 1). Extremely fine with almost full original colour, attractive (£150-200)

Provenance:
Fawcett/Litman Collection.

The Basingstoke Canal, from Basingstoke to the river Wey near Byfleet, a distance of over 37 miles, was begun in 1788 and completed in the summer of 1794. John Pinkerton (†1813), the individual named on the token, from Cawthorne, near Barnsley, was the principal contractor, and it is thought possible that the token was struck in the mid-1790s.
