Essex, Hornchurch, George Cotton, Proof Halfpenny, in bronzed-copper, crowned bust of Edward IV right, sloping top to 1 of date, rev. crowned arms, extended line under castle, rose at point, edge plain, 9.61g/6h (DH 33; Judson 1047). Brilliant and practically as struck (£50-70)

George Cotton, who lived at Romford, ordered the Hornchurch tokens from Matthew Boulton in 1795 (
cf. Doty, CTCJ, June 1999, pp.20-4); it would appear that a total of 63 ‘specimens’ [or Proofs] were supplied to Cotton
