Derbyshire, Buxton, William Hay, Thomas Tomlinson and William Orme, Halfpenny, 1796, crescent, rev. arms of the Duke of Devonshire, buxton token edge, 11.32g/6h (DH 3). Extremely fine with much original colour and brilliant fields, rare (£100-150)

About 200 struck. William Robert Hay (1761-1839), a coin collector and barrister practising on the Northern Circuit, lived at Dukinfield, near Manchester; he was ordained into the priesthood in 1798 and later became a magistrate (Dykes,
BNJ 1997, pp.115-122). Thomas Tomlinson, surgeon, Brazenose street, Manchester; Wiliam Orme, drawing master, Ardwick, Manchester. The obverse of the token depicts the three-storey crescent at Buxton, designed by the York architect John Carr for the Duke of Devonshire and erected in 1785 at a cost of £120,000; in December 2003 plans were revealed which will transform the crescent into an 87-bedroom hotel and spa, scheduled to open in 2007
