Cheshire, Chester, Skidmore’s Globe series, Penny, 1797, frontal elevation of Chester Castle, rev. globe, edge lettered, 24.77g/11h (DH 1 and Middlesex 121). Light spotting in centre of obverse and traces of handling on reverse, otherwise extremely fine with virtually full original colour (£120-150)

Chester Castle, a Norman stone motte and bailey fortress, was founded by Hugh de Avranches, Earl of Chester, in 1069 on the site of a Saxon stronghold. In the late 1780s most of the remaining medieval buildings and towers were levelled to make way for a new barrack block and the Assize County Courts; little remains today
