Mary (1553-1554), LADY JANE GREY, fantasy Shilling or Groat, 1553, by E. Emery, mm. lis on obv., crowned bust right, rev. square-topped shield, date above, portcullis below, SI· DEVS· NOBISCVM· QVIS· CONT· NOS·, 29mm, 5.55g/12h (Pagan, BNJ 1971, –; Lawrence –). Very fine and a seemingly unpublished example of Emery’s work (£80-120)

Struck in the hammered style of the Queen Mary coinage. Pagan lists a jeton and a medal of Lady Jane Grey (nos. 87, 88), both with a three-quarter left facing bust. Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed Queen on 6 July 1553 but subsequently executed on 12 February 1554 (see also lot 1379)
