A scarce Royal Naval Division M.M. and Bar group of three awarded to Chief Petty Officer G. Young, Howe Battalion, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve

Military Medal, G.V.R., with Second Award Bar (CZ-2761 P.O. G. Young, Howe Bn. R.N.V.R.); British War and Victory Medals (C.Z.2761 C.P.O. R.N.V.R.) together with two portrait photographs, three news cuttings and a ribbon bar, good very fine (3) £600-700

‘Awarded Bar to Medal. Another mark of distinction for service on the battlefield has been awarded to Petty Officer George Young, a Forfarian serving with the Royal Naval Division. He has been in the fighting line for about sixteen months, and on no fewer than three occasions his work in action has been such as to secure the recognition of his superior officers.

A few months back he had bestowed upon him the Military Medal in recognition of his services in a bombing attack on the enemy trenches, and now he has been granted a bar to the Medal under circumstances which brought out his resource and soldierly qualities.

All the officers of his company had been put out of action, but George rose to the occasion and, taking charge, he led the men to their objective. In broad daylight, and under heavy shell fire, he also went out and rendered assistance to many wounded lying in the open.

Petty Officer Young has, it is understood, been recommended for a commission. He joined the Royal Naval Division in January, 1915, and during his period of active service he has had a full share of the grim work of battle.’ The above details were taken from a contemporary Forfarshire news cutting. Approximately 23 first bars to the Military Medal were awarded to the Royal Naval Division during the Great War.
