D.C.M. London Gazette 22 October 1917, details 26 January 1918: ‘L/Sjt. W. C. Grant, Seaforth Highlanders (Grantown-on-Spey). For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his platoon to their objective after its commander had become a casualty, consolidated the position under heavy artillery fire and maintained communication on both flanks and later with his battalion headquarters. Later, seeing the unit on his left checked by machine gun fire, he personally led a party to the emplacement, killed the gun team and captured sixty prisoners. He showed a splendid example of leadership and courage.’

Bar to D.C.M.
London Gazette 4 March 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in leading his platoon forward on two occasions in an attack, and taking command after his officer had become a casualty. He also collected and organised the remnants of another platoon. On reaching the outskirts of a village he was met with such fierce fire that he could not get on. Withdrawing his men, he poured in an intense Lewis gun and rifle fire, and eventually established his platoon in the enemy trench, where he killed and captured several of the enemy.’
