A Great War C.B. group of eight to Vice-Admiral F. G. G. Chilton, Royal Navy

The Most Honourable Order of The Bath (Civil), C.B., silver-gilt, Hallmarks for ‘London 1918’; 1914-15 Star (Commr., R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (Commr., R.N.); Coronation 1911; Jubilee 1935; Italy, Order of the Crown, 4th class, gold and enamels; Order of St Maurice and St Lazarus, 5th class, gilt and enamels, last medal with slight damage to crown and enamel, generally good very fine or better (8) £300-400

Vice-Admiral Francis George Gillilan Chilton, C.B. was Second in Command of H.M.S. Berwick July 1912 to November 1915. This ship rescued refugees from Puerto Mexico during the revolution in April 1914 and took them to Tampico for which Chilton received the thanks of Admiral Mayo U.S.N. In August 1914 H.M.S. Berwick helped in the search for the German raiders S.M.S. Karlsruhe and Kronprinz Wilhelm. H.M.S. Berwick captured the Hamburg-America liner Spreewald in the North Atlantic 9 October 1914 along with two colliers. (The Spreewald was fitted as an armed cruiser). Chilton served as an Assistant Director of Naval Intelligence and Acting Captain, November 1915 to January 1918. He commanded H.M.S. Foresight January 1918 to October 1919 in the Mediterranean. This ship acted as the Flagship for Admiral Gough-Calthorpe when he signed the Armistice with Turkey on behalf of the Allies and later saw service in the Black Sea. Chilton was S.B.N.O. at Odessa when the Peace Conference at Versailles decided that the Ukraine including Odessa was to be evacuated. He participated with the British consul, the French Command and Russian Volunteer Officers to evacuate those persons likely to be harmed or killed by the Bolsheviks. His post war services included, President Naval Personnel Committee 1926-28; Chief of Staff to C. in C. Portsmouth 1928-29; A.D.C. to the King 1933-35; Rear Admiral and S.N.O., Yangtse for which services he received an expression of appreciation from Consul General at Hankow, 1936. Vice-Admiral Retired List 1942-44, H.M.S. President.
