Admiral Sir Ernest Russell Archer, K.C.B., C.B.E., born 1891, entered the Royal Navy 1904, served in Destroyers during the Great War (Mentioned in Despatches); served during the Second World War and was present as Captain of H.M.S. Revenge during Operation Medium, the bombardment of Cherbourg, 1940 (Mentioned in Despatches); Commodore, Royal Naval Barracks, Portsmouth, 1941 (C.B.E.); Senior British Naval Officer, North Russia 1943; led the joint Military Mission to Soviet Russia 1944 (Freedom Cross of Norway; Order of the Oaken Crown of Luxembourg); Rear Admiral British Pacific Fleet 1945(C.B.); Flag Officer, Gibraltar 1947 and promoted Vice-Admiral the same year; Flag Officer, Commanding, Scotland and Northern Ireland 1948-50 (K.C.B.); Admiral 1950 and retired later that year.
