James Ferns, aged 25, Railway Platform Porter, on 12th November 1934 prevented a woman who, owing to dense fog, had fallen onto the permanent way at Gilmour Street Station, Paisley, from being run over by a train. He was awarded the Bronze Medallion of the Carnegie Hero Fund Trust, its highest honour which, from 1908 to the present day, has only been awarded on 171 occasions.
