Frederick William Nixon served in the South African Campaign in 1877-78 as Commanding Royal Engineer to the Transkei Field Force against the Galekas, and was present at the Battle of Quintana. He was twice mentioned in despatches, London Gazette 26 February and 26 March 1878, received the medal with clasp and the Brevet of Major. He was employed with the Irish Hospital during the Boer War and received the medal with three clasps.
