London County Council Fire Brigade Certificate, inscribed ‘This is to certify that James Samuel Cregeen has been commended in orders for saving life at a fire which occurred on 9th August 1917 at the Carlton Hotel, Pall Mall. James Samuel Cregeen was born in December 1884 at Liverpool, Lancashire and joined the Royal Navy on 4 December 1902. He was advanced to the rate of Leading Seaman in 1910 and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve at Chatham in February 1911. Later the same year he performed the life saving acts which resulted in the above award. Mobilised from the reserve on the outbreak of the Great War, he served in shore establishments and was demobilised in July 1917 to rejoin the London Fire Brigade.
