Alfred Henry Kingwell was born in Ivybridge, Devon, on 20 September 1900 and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker on 6 August 1919. He was seconded for service with the New Zealand Navy for three years, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in November 1934. He saw further service during the Second World War, and was shore discharged on 10 October 1945.
