Frederick John Eva was born in Falmouth, Cornwall, on 8 October 1894 and joined the Royal Navy as a Cook’s Mate on 13 October 1913. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Prince George from the outbreak of War to 14 March 1916, and then in various shore based establishments, and was promoted Cook on 19 May 1919, and Leading Cook on 12 April 1924. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 10 December 1928, and was promoted Petty Officer Cook on 11 February 1932, and Chief Petty Officer Cook on 15 May 1934. He was invalided out of the service, to pension, on 18 December 1935; he subsequently served during the Second World War as a Special Constable.
