Hammer Price:
£1,900

Richard III (1483-1485), Penny, London, type 2b, mm. boar’s head on obv. only, no marks by neck or on rev., 0.70g/7h (DNW 99, 413, same dies; N 1684; S 2165). Slightly bent and edge a little ragged, otherwise fine, the mintmark and King’s name clear, extremely rare; one of half a dozen specimens known £2,000-£2,600

Provenance: Found in Norfolk.

Among the items stolen in February 1962 from the premises of B.A. Seaby was a Richard III London penny, which at the time was unique. To this day it has not been recovered. A few years ago a low grade specimen was discovered and sold at auction and since then two more examples have passed through these rooms (in 2012 and 2019)
