Roman, gold Finger Ring, 3rd-4th cent., internal diam. 1.2cm, oval bezel set with a concave garnet intaglio engraved with a butterfly alighting on a fountain, on one side of the bezel is an attached loop for a chain. In very fine condition with slight wear to the intaglio £200-£260
Provenance: From a UK private collection.
In the Roman period the butterfly symbolises the soul being liberated and the elevation of a person to god-like status (Apotheosis)
