Charles I (1625-1649), Tower mint, Unite, Gp B, class Ib, mm. heart (over plumes on rev.), 8.95g/7h (SCBI Schneider –; SCBI Brooker –; N 2149; S 2690A). Some hairline scratches on obverse, otherwise very fine, the unusual overmark clear and extremely rare (£500-600)

The plumes mark was introduced after heart but Schneider (BNJ vol.28, p.382) refers to a specimen in the collection of Sir John Evans with mm. heart obv., feathers rev. It is perhaps likely that this reverse is from that (then aberrant) die with the premature use of the plumes mark corrected
