Java, Gelderland, gold Ducat, 1646, obv. countermarked b (Batavia) in shield by knight’s elbow, 3.49g/5h (Scholten 9; cf. Codrington p.130; KM. –; F 5). Coin slightly crimped but very fine, countermark about extremely fine, stained on reverse, extremely rare (£2,500-3,000)

To the cataloguer’s knowledge this is only the second example to appear at public auction. The other example traced was in the R.J. Ford Collection (Taisei-Baldwin-Gillio Auction, 23 February 1995, lot 4, sold for $7,800).

20,000 Ducats were countermarked by a resolution of 26 August 1686
