XVII: Copies of Cromwell Coins, A false steel obverse die for striking Cromwell Shillings, probably 19th century; together with uniface lead Shillings (2), both made from the die, laureate bust left, 10.21g, 4.70g (cf. ESC 254 [1005]; cf. S 3228) [3]. Die extremely fine, one coin fine, other fair £150-£200

Provenance: Bt Spink 1970.

This is the obverse die that made the false gold shilling, Lessen j30 (see Lot 1285). The die itself was probably made in the 19th century, with a genuine silver shilling acting as the puncheon. The two lead uniface squeezes were made by Keith Howes at the British Musuem in 1970, using a screw printing press
