Wilhelmshaven has always been the main deep water military port in Germany, and was hugely important to the German Navy. Following the end of the Second World War the military elements of the port were dismantled by the allies and there was a permanent British garrison in the town from 1947 until 1972. The British offers club was a popular social venue for dinner, drinks and dancing, with many British soldiers taking their wives or girlfriends at least once a week.
