Hammer Price:
£240

A 19th century Scottish bracelet, composed of seven silver roundels with national/heraldic emblems, each detailed in black enamel, and applied with a silver gilt motif with engraved detailing, comprising St. Andrew with saltire, a white stag with cross, a lion rampant, a crowned thistle, the City of Leith coat of arms, Robert the Bruce on horseback and a saltire beneath a crown, unmarked, length 16.5cm. £100-£150

The arms of the City of Leith were granted on 27th February 1889. By 1920, the burgh had been merged into Edinburgh.

The Leith arms depict the Virgin and Infant Saviour in her arms, seated within a galley with two masts, beneath a cloud, often depicted with the motto ‘Persevere’ below. The parish church of South Leith is dedicated to St Mary and the ship signifies the port and its seafaring trade. The significance of the cloud above the ship is not clear but was possibly taken from an image on an old Burgh seal, and it was suggested to be a protecting cloud.
