Naval General Service 1793-1840, 1 clasp, Syria (William Hy. Aldred.) minor edge bruising, otherwise very fine £500-£700

William Henry Aldred was born at Gosport, Hampshire, on 16 June 1823 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Vanguard on 9 April 1840, serving in this ship on and off the coast of Syria in November 1840. He joined Satellite as Ordinary Seaman on 11 December 1843, advancing to Able Seaman in March 1844, and to Captain of the Mizzen Top in March 1847. He joined Excellent in November 1847 in the same rate and then Rifleman as Gunner’s Mate, and in the same rate to Excellent again on 10 April 1853, volunteering for a further seven years continuous service on 1 July 1853.
