John McLennan was born in Stornaway, Scotland, and enlisted into the Cameron Highlanders from the militia at Glasgow on 13 January 197, aged 18 years 4 months, a rigger by trade. He served in Egypt and the Sudan from 4 October 1897 to 21 March 1900, when he went to South Africa and served there until 9 October 1902. Also entitled to Q.S.A. with clasps for Cape Colony, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill and Wittebergen, and the K.S.A. with 2 clasps. He was appointed Lance-Corporal on 18 July 1899, but ‘deprived Lance stripe’ on 18 July 1900. He is shown as ‘absent’ for the last three of his 12 year service. Sold with copied discharge papers.
