James Dykes Paton Hutchison was born in Glasgow on 15 August 1898 and was a deck officer with the Union Castle Mail Steam Ship Company. He was appointed temporary Midshipman in the Royal Naval Reserve on 24 November 1916, and undertook a Torpedo course at H.M.S. Actaeon in February 1917. Subsequently joining the Rosyth Submarine Depot Ship H.M.S. Ithuriel, he was promoted Temporary Acting Sub Lieutenant on 15 August 1918, and was demobilised on 6 March 1919.
