Seven: Able Seaman S. L. Pert, Royal Navy, a veteran of the Great War, who went on to serve during the Second War with the light cruiser H.M.S. Emerald as the flagship of the ‘Fast Group’ of the Eastern Fleet

Sidney Lawrence Pert was born in Tottenham, London, on 1 August 1901, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 13 November 1917. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Impregnable from that date to 5 July 1918, and in H.M.S. Colossus (battleship) from 6 July 1918 to 3 February 1919. Advanced Able Seaman on 16 December 1920, Pert was injured on 12 October 1925 in H.M.S. Furious whilst securing the Forecastle guard rail. He served in H.M.S. Nelson from 1 September 1932 to 3 January 1935, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in October 1934.

Pert’s subsequent service included with the light cruiser H.M.S.
Emerald, July 1939 - April 1943. She was initially employed during the Second War as part of the 12th Cruiser Squadron on Northern Patrol duties. With Augustus Agar, V.C. as her captain, the Emerald was then employed on Atlantic convoy escort duty, before transferring for service in the Indian Ocean in 1941. She was employed on escort duties for troop convoys in the Middle East prior to joining the Eastern Fleet as the flagship of the ‘Fast Group’ in March 1942. The Emerald returned to the UK for a refit in August 1942, Pert transferred to H.M.S. Victory in April 1943. Subsequent service included at the Coastal Force Bases H.M.S. Hornet and Midge. Pert was released from service in September 1945.
