Jane Johnston Bowman was born in the Gorbals, Lanarkshire, on 13 May 1881. She qualified in nursing at the London Hospital, and joined the Q.A.R.N.N.S as a Nursing Sister on 2 October 1911. She served at the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar, before transferring to the Royal Naval Hospital Chatham in January 1913. In August 1914 she was appointed to the R.N. Hospital Ship China until returning to Chatham in February 1915. She saw subsequent war service at the Royal Naval Hospital Plymouth, and at Malta until 20 May 1919, when she was posted back to the Royal Naval Hospital Chatham.
