William Thomas Jones was born in Lambeth, London in May 1895. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in August 1912, and advanced to Leading Seaman in July 1925. Jones served with H.M.S. Laforey (destroyer), March 1916 - January 1917, H.M.S. Stork (destroyer), February 1917 - January 1919 and H.M.S. Concord, May - July 1928.
