William Henry White was born in Walworth, London in December 1877. He joined the Royal Marine Artillery as a Private in June 1897, and advanced to Gunner in September 1898. White served with H.M.S. Euryalus (cruiser), August 1914 - December 1916, during which time she was present at the Battle of Heligoland Bight, and took part in the Dardanelles Campaign.
