Walter Nudds was born in Kings Lynn in February 1873. He joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in January 1897, and advanced to Chief Stoker in March 1915 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in February 1912). Nudds served with H.M.S. Liverpool (cruiser), September 1910 - May 1919, during which time she was engaged during the battle of Heligoland Bight (28 August 1914), the attempted rescue of the sinking H.M.S. Audacious, operations off the West Coast of Africa, and during the Russian Intervention.
